She earned a B.A. in Journalism from Cal State Northridge while working in local radio and television news. Inspired by her own educational journey, she returned to the Harbor Area to teach high school English and later earned an M.A. in Educational Administration from Cal State Dominguez Hills.&nbsp; She holds four teaching and administrative credentials, one of which was partly completed at Cal State Long Beach.While mentoring thousands of students, Malauulu has continued to work the night shift as a registered longshore worker at the twin ports, proudly representing the goods-movement industry. A multi-term labor leader, she made history as the first woman elected Benefits Officer of ILWU Local 13 in the union’s 84-year history, where she championed health care and pensions for more than 30,000 workers and their families.In 2016, she became the first Latina elected to the Long Beach Community College District Board of Trustees, serving multiple terms as Board President and Vice President. She is also the first trustee with direct ties to the Pacific Islander community through her husband, who is Samoan. Vivian spearheaded the creation of the LBCC Labor Center—the first of its kind in the L.A. Harbor region—and launched the popular bi-monthly Beach Flea Market at LBCC’s Trade Tech Campus, helping more than 400 local small businesses rebound after the pandemic.Malauulu is now in her 14th year on the Greater Long Beach YMCA Early Childhood Education Board, championing quality preschools for low-income families and supporting initiatives like the new YMCA Youth Center in Wrigley. She completed eight years on the Long Beach Commission on Youth and Families, where she strengthened its role as an advisory body to the City Council and helped establish both the City’s annual Youth Forum and the nationally recognized Youth Poet Laureate Program. She was appointed by Supervisor Janice Hahn to L.A. County’s Post-Pandemic Economic Resiliency Team as a labor representative and by State Senate Majority Leader Lena Gonzalez to California’s AB 639 Task Force on Transitioning Port Jobs to a Cleaner Economy. Nationally, she serves on the Executive Boards of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) and the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT).Vivian and her husband, George, have been married for 27 years and have lived in Long Beach since 2000. They have proudly raised their four children—now ages 16 to 25—in the same Wrigley home where they started their family. From the time they were toddlers, their kids attended local schools and played sports through the city’s parks and recreation programs.After years of putting family first, Vivian is nearing the completion of her lifelong goal: earning a doctorate degree.&nbsp; Her focus is on skilled workforce development in the age of artificial intelligence and the impact of automation on displaced blue-collar workers. Deeply committed to community service, she is ready to take that experience and leadership to City Hall to serve her West Long Beach neighbors.

The "strum-mittee" agrees that our guests rocked Ukulele Night this past Monday!&nbsp;We are UKE-fully grateful for a UKE-tastic evening!&nbsp;The UKE jokes were hilarious...UKE-n’t make this up!It was such a joyful evening!&nbsp;Thank you to everyone who joined us.&nbsp;We sang Christmas carols, learned the basics of playing, and shared a lot of laughs.&nbsp;There was a wonderful mix of friends, neighbors, and families, and the sense of community&nbsp;in our backyard&nbsp;was incredibly strong. It was the perfect way to kick off the holiday season.&nbsp;We are especially grateful to Dr. Victor "Ukulele_dad" Thompson for generously sharing his gift of music and teaching us the foundations of the ukulele.&nbsp;His talents truly made the evening memorable. David grew up in a single-parent household and faced tremendous challenges, including living in a neighborhood deeply affected by gang violence. He has been open about the realities he survived on the very blocks many of us know well.I first met David about eight years ago while we were volunteering at a community event, and I’ll never forget the impression he made. He was young but carried himself with a maturity well beyond his years. He connected easily with people, stayed calm under pressure, and organized others with a natural ease. When I eventually learned the hardships he had overcome, I was honestly blown away by his strength, perseverance, and purpose.Against the odds, he went to college, excelled, and—most importantly—made the intentional choice to come back home to uplift the very community that shaped him.David went on to found a nonprofit that uses basketball as a pathway to keep kids safe, connected, and inspired to change the trajectory of their lives. His new book shares that journey in a powerful way, offering a blueprint for resilience, leadership, and hope.This brunch will give guests the chance to meet him, hear the story behind the book, take photos, and get a signed hard cover copy.This event is especially meaningful for anyone who works with youth or has young people in their lives—parents, coaches, teachers, mentors, aunties, uncles, or anyone supporting a child who may be struggling in school, facing difficult environments, or simply searching for direction. David’s message speaks directly to them.While this is technically a campaign event, the focus is&nbsp;not&nbsp;fundraising. The suggested contribution is $100, but if someone is experiencing hardship or simply unfamiliar with the political process,&nbsp;please reassure them they are absolutely welcome to attend without donating. From Strumming to StorytellingEmail from Vivian

My name is Jordan Malauulu, and I’m Vivian’s oldest son. Today is my birthday! I am finally 21!Growing up, I was probably the most challenging out of the four of us. My parents were used to my two older sisters being the “good ones,” and then there was me — always pushing limits, getting into stuff, and definitely keeping them on their toes.There are plenty of stories about the stunts I pulled, and I know I stressed my parents out more than a few times.It seems like I was always in trouble and grounded. Looking back now, I’m honestly really grateful they ran a tight ship.Especially my mom.She didn’t play when it came to school. Grades mattered. Homework had to be done. No excuses.After school, she’d pick me up and take me to the Bret Harte Library on Willow. We’d do homework, check out books, and sometimes join whatever activities they had going on. It’s what helped me stay focused, set goals, and handle my business.What I understand even more now is how much my mom was doing behind the scenes.She worked nights on the docks and still showed up for everything during the day. School, practices, field trips, everything we needed. I honestly don’t know when she slept.On top of that, she was always giving back. I remember going with her to volunteer, sitting in meetings, watching her serve on boards like the YMCA. I didn’t fully get it back then, but I could see how much she cared about our community and about helping people.That stuck with me.Today, I’m a college student at Fresno State, living out my dream of playing college football. I know for a fact I wouldn’t be here without the discipline, support, and belief my family — especially my mom — gave me.She’s always been my biggest supporter. At games, at school, in everything I’ve done. She and my dad taught me to give back and look out for others.That’s something I carry with me every day.So today, on my 21st birthday, instead of asking for something for myself, I’m asking you to support my mom as she runs for Long Beach City Council.If you can, please take a minute to visit her website, sign up to volunteer, and get involved. My name is Ms. Robbie Butler. I am a community advocate and founding member of the Long Beach Black Health Equity Collaborative (BHEC). I'm also the President and Founder of the Speak Up Empowerment Foundation, Inc. (SUEF), a nonprofit organization that I established in 2015 to support single mothers in our community.&nbsp;SUEF's mission is to uplift, encourage, and empower women who shoulder the tremendous responsibility of raising their children on their own.I first met Vivian in 2015.&nbsp;She was canvassing our neighborhood during her first campaign for the Long Beach City College Board of Trustees, and I still recall the evening that she knocked on my door.&nbsp;She was walking from house to house, introducing herself to residents, determined and focused.&nbsp;&nbsp;I remember thinking, "Okay, this lady must really want to do this if she's out walking around and talking to us this late, so I listened."We talked for a while as she shared info about her work as a longshoreman and professor at LBCC.&nbsp;Her commitment to the working-class people and her passion for education really resonated with me.&nbsp;I was struck by her authenticity and drive. I learned that we were neighbors—she lives just a few blocks away!&nbsp;I started seeing her around town more often and shortly after that, we became friends.In 2019, Vivian served as one of the keynote speakers at my nonprofit organization's signature empowerment forum event which is hosted every April. She brought her mother and one of her daughters, and they spent the entire day with us. Vivian shared her experience being raised by a single mother—how she watched her mom go to school and work tirelessly, and how her mother’s strength fueled her own drive to succeed. Her&nbsp;words had a deep impact, and Vivian's&nbsp;testimony touched every woman in that room because her story offered a powerful perspective of success for the women that I serve.&nbsp;Earlier this year, Vivian was honored with our 2025 Community Empowerment Leader Award.&nbsp;Our Board chose her because we have personally witnessed her unwavering dedication to representing, uplifting, and fighting for the mothers and other underserved but deserving residents of our community.When Vivian shared with me that she was running for City Council, I immediately offered my support. That's why I am proud to host an event for her this Sunday, one which will bring together two of the things that we share in common (other than our community services) - that's our love for our children and our love&nbsp;for sports. My son grew up playing a variety of sports, and Vivian’s children are also deeply involved in athletics. It’s a connection we both cherish.We will be at the Long Beach Unified Bar and Lounge, a longtime community establishment owned by our friend Chuckie Miller.&nbsp;Chuckie played football at Long Beach Poly, then later went on to UCLA and the NFL - he also&nbsp;served as my son's longtime football mentor and trainer. My name is&nbsp;Dr. Victor Thompson, and I am very excited for&nbsp;Ukulele Night happening tonight&nbsp;in the Malauulu backyard. It is truly&nbsp;an honor&nbsp;to facilitate this special event in support of my good friend,&nbsp;Vivian Malauulu.I have known Vivian and her husband George for many years, and we have partnered on numerous initiatives to support Pacific Islander students across our community. I have witnessed firsthand the deep passion that both of them have for education—creating opportunities for students through sports, art, music, culture, and of course, academics. Vivian has dedicated her entire career to uplifting students, from her years as a high school teacher, to a college instructor, and now more than a decade as a trustee at Long Beach City College.During my time collaborating with LBCC programs—especially the MANA Program serving Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi students—Vivian has always shown up. She attends our events, encourages our students, shares her personal stories, and lifts up families in our community through advocacy and resources. Her support has made a meaningful impact.I am proud of her for stepping up to lead the Seventh District as a council member, and I know she will serve her community with the same heart and dedication she has always shown in education. That is why I am happy to support her campaign in this small way—by sharing something I am passionate about:&nbsp;music, and especially the&nbsp;ukulele.Since retiring from the Los Angeles County Office of Education, I have devoted more of my time to teaching ukulele, composing music, and helping others discover the joy of playing. ﻿Today, on Veterans Day, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all who have served our country — and to the families who have stood beside them. Your commitment and sacrifice have protected our freedoms and helped shape our communities.&nbsp;Thank you for your service.There is one veteran in particular who shaped my life in ways I am still grateful for every day —&nbsp;my stepfather, Henry Williams. I called him Dad. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean War.No one could have predicted that his army service in the early 1950s would later play a pivotal role in my upbringing when I immigrated to the United States in the 1980s.One of the very first places he took me was to his longtime friend’s home in Compton.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her name was Mrs. Polk and she ran the&nbsp;Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary&nbsp;in Los Angeles. I didn’t speak English well and I was too young to&nbsp;understand what the VFWLA did, but&nbsp;my Dad signed me up anyway. He wanted me to learn the importance of service, community, and honoring&nbsp;veterans.One evening each month, Dad would drop me off at Mrs. Polk’s house and she would take a small group of us — girls&nbsp;from different backgrounds — to&nbsp;Patriotic Hall in downtown Los&nbsp;Angeles for our monthly meetings. I was&nbsp;the only Latina in her station wagon, but when we walked into that giant building in L.A., I saw others who looked like me and then some — Latina, Black, Asian, Pacific Islander, White —&nbsp;all united by service to veterans of foreign wars.&nbsp;We volunteered at community events, marched in parades, and attended conferences focused on government,&nbsp;leadership, and public service.&nbsp;One summer, we boarded a Greyhound bus to Sacramento for a week-long statewide convention.The top two photos are of my Dad and his army buddies. He is the first soldier&nbsp;on the left of the back row.&nbsp;The bottom photo is of my VFW troop in 1984 when I was 10 years old.&nbsp;Mrs. Polk is wearing&nbsp;the turquoise dress with the&nbsp;white sweater.&nbsp;I&nbsp;loved wearing that uniform with the blue beret!<img src="https://run.imgix.net/cd340f06-36fa-4a21-b39a-8822c9990238/4a1e0872-7620-48fb-a2cf-4deb5d7b7a1b/4a1e0872-7620-48fb-a2cf-4deb5d7b7a1b.jpg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C1200%2C1200&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="center" alignwidth="40" variant="base">It was there — in those monthly meetings where I was struggling to understand the conversations and learning English word by word — that I began to understand&nbsp;what it means to serve.&nbsp;That was&nbsp;the first place I felt connected to a broader purpose in this new country I now called home.Years later, when I was teaching at Long Beach City College, I often encouraged my journalism students to interview and write about veterans&nbsp;on campus and in the community. Some of the most meaningful stories my students published were about men and women whose military experiences had shaped our city in profound ways. Those stories always reminded me of my Dad,&nbsp;and of the early lessons he gifted me.Service is not just&nbsp;something you talk about. My name is&nbsp;Lucinda&nbsp;Nares Pueblos, and I was a teacher at Banning High School in Wilmington when Vivian Malauulu was a student. I also had the privilege of serving as the faculty advisor for the Associated Student Body (ASB) program.I first met Vivian when she was a tenth grader, freshly elected by her peers as sophomore class president. She remained active in leadership all three years of high school — bringing bright ideas, boundless energy, and a remarkable sense of organization to every project. It came as no surprise that by her senior year, she was elected Student Body President for both fall and spring semesters.<img src="https://run.imgix.net/cd340f06-36fa-4a21-b39a-8822c9990238/73cc4a68-4a96-4ec9-a3ed-b84c27621f7a/73cc4a68-4a96-4ec9-a3ed-b84c27621f7a.jpg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C1200%2C1600&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="center" alignwidth="40" variant="base">Vivian’s involvement reached far beyond the classroom. She volunteered on class councils, was elected Commissioner of Athletics and Commissioner of Spirit, participated in theater and play production, performed on the drill team, was a cheerleader, and ran track. Yet, through it all, she maintained an outstanding grade point average, balancing AP and honors classes while working at the mall after school.Even as a teenager, Vivian had an independent mind and a strong moral compass. She always fought for fairness and inclusion. During her senior year, she introduced Spanish morning announcements over the public address (PA) system, ensuring our large Spanish-speaking student body could fully participate in campus life. She also worked with the cafeteria manager to create satellite lunch stations across campus — reducing long lines and giving students more time to actually enjoy lunch. Her leadership also revitalized school spirit by introducing class-specific pep rallies, spirit weeks, and cultural celebrations. This gave each grade and affinity groups the chance to shine.As a senior,&nbsp;she earned the respect of her peers by being voted as Homecoming Queen, Most Popular, Most&nbsp;Respected, Most Likely to Succeed, and Most Spirited — and of course, she couldn’t do all those things without also being Most Talkative.Community leaders also recognized her leadership ability. The&nbsp;Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education unanimously&nbsp;selected&nbsp;her to represent the more than 650-thousand LAUSD students&nbsp;as the student board member to the&nbsp;monthly school board meetings. The national&nbsp;American Legion Auxiliary chose her as a&nbsp;California Girls’ State Delegate, and the City of Carson sent her to Soka, Japan&nbsp;as an&nbsp;ambassador. In 1992, she collaborated with the Los Angeles City Council to include Banning High School in a citywide event that earned Wilmington a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for making the world’s biggest burrito — stretching down Avalon Boulevard from Anaheim Street to Pacific Coast Highway — and attracting the support of hundreds of enthusiastic community members.After graduating from college, Vivian returned to Banning HS as a teacher, coach, and theater director — mentoring students the same way she once led them. Her passion for student engagement and community pride never faded. Today, that same drive fuels her leadership as a college trustee, union advocate, and community builder.Vivian has made Banning HS proud — as a student, educator, alumna, and public servant. Soon after being elected to the LBCC College Board she established a scholarship for Banning students and continues to give back through her work with ILWU and the Harbor Area community.I’m honored to support her campaign for Long Beach City Council and to serve on the Host Committee for the Banning High School Alumni Fundraiser this Saturday. In just the past week, I attended six different neighborhood meetings focused on issues impacting West Long Beach, with many more already on the calendar. I’ve been meeting with individuals, groups, and organizations to share our vision and to listen closely to their priorities. Most importantly, I’m knocking on doors and spending time directly with voters—listening, learning, and building relationships one conversation at a time.We are well into meet-and-greet season, and I am grateful to friends who are opening their homes and introducing me to their neighbors.
