My name is Koa and I’m George and Vivian’s youngest of four kids. Today is my 17th birthday.
For the past two years, I’ve been the only kid at home since my three older siblings are all away in college. A lot of people think being the youngest means I’m spoiled, but trust me, that’s not how it works in our house. My parents raised me to handle my own business and stay on top of things. We were all brought up to be independent and responsible. My mom always says, “Much is expected from those to whom much is given,” and I hear that in my head every day. Also, “Make good choices,” and her favorite Spanish saying, “El que no chilla, no mama.” It kinda means “the squeaky wheel gets the oil” or “closed mouths don’t get fed.”
It’s no doubt that we get our athleticism from Dad, but our determination and drive in school comes straight from Mama Viv. She encourages me to do my best on and off the field. It doesn’t matter how many touchdown passes I throw — she still wants to know if my homework is done, what my grades are, and if my room is clean.

My parents also taught us to give back. We’ve done beach and river cleanups, read to kids at the YMCA preschool, volunteered at Bret Harte Library on Willow, and worked the snack bar at local parks. I’m really thankful for the safe spaces we have in West Long Beach where I got to grow, learn, and play.
I was only seven when my mom got elected to the college board. My brother and I used to ride our bikes around the neighborhood dropping off yard signs to her supporters. I’ve got a license now, so I’ll be driving to deliver her city council signs in a few months.
We’re having our community campaign kick-off this Saturday, and I’d love for you to join us. We will celebrate both my birthday and our great west side together. Just click ATTEND to RSVP and we will have a cupcake waiting for you. Hope to see you there!
Thanks,
Koa Malauulu
