Democracy and Dough! A Presidential Pizza Party!

From Chef Michael Martinez

When 5,000 Pies first opened on Santa Fe Avenue in 2014, it was never meant to be just a pizza shop. From the very beginning, this place was built on a shared vision—one rooted in faith, service, and a deep commitment to West Long Beach.

That vision belongs to the Teter family, who founded 5,000 Pies as a social enterprise with purpose. Their goal was clear: to invest in the Westside by creating real opportunities for young adults through job training, mentorship, and meaningful work. They believed food could be more than nourishment—it could be a pathway to dignity, structure, and transformation.

I’ve been honored to serve as the chef and steward of that vision. Every day, our team works to carry forward the ministry that the Teters started: a place where young people are supported, families feel welcome, and community comes first.

Our name, 5,000 Pies, is rooted in faith. It comes from the biblical story of the loaves and fishes—a reminder that when we lead with generosity and trust in God, He can multiply what we place in His hands. That belief continues to guide us.

I give all glory to God. It’s only through the Holy Spirit that 5,000 Pies is still going strong after all these years. The Lord is using us to bless the community.

I’ve also had a front-row seat to public service and civic engagement through my twin sister, Michele Martinez, former Mayor Pro Tem of Santa Ana. Watching her serve her community has reinforced for me that real change happens when people show up, stay grounded, and lead with integrity. While my work happens through food rather than elected office, the values are the same—service, accountability, and care for community.

Over the years, we’ve been humbled to receive recognition from the City of Long Beach and the State of California—not just for the food we make, but for the work we do alongside the young people we mentor and the neighbors we serve.

Just as important, 5,000 Pies has become a place where families gather—where pizza, cookies, and buffalo fries turn into shared moments and lasting memories. That sense of belonging is what sustains us.

We’re proud to partner with community leaders like Vivian Malauulu for events like her Presidents’ Day Pizza Party: Democracy & Dough—a celebration of civic engagement, community, and the small businesses that help make West Long Beach strong. Vivian and my sister both serve on the National Association of Latino and Elected Officials (NALEO) and together they have supported initiatives that amplify many diverse voices in our community.

Thank you for supporting 5,000 Pies and for believing, as the Teter family did from the start, that investing in people can truly change a neighborhood. We hope to see you on Monday!

Chef Michael Martinez
