From Only Child to Big Sister—Why It Matters for Long Beach

I was one of the youngest cousins in our big Honduran family when I left in 1981. For the next four years in the U.S., I was an only child. Then, in 1985, when I was eleven, my baby sister Geneva was born—and my life changed all over again. I went from being one of the little cousins to the oldest in our home. I quickly learned to look out for her and help our parents with household chores, embracing the “big sister” role with a deep sense of responsibility.
Today that baby sister turns 40. I’m so proud of the woman she’s become and of the example she sets for my own kids as a strong, educated, hard-working biracial woman. Celebrating her reminds me how family—and community—shape who we are. I’m lucky to have her by my side through every milestone, from standing as Maid of Honor at my wedding to being one of my closest professional confidants. My family is blessed that she’s such a supportive Auntie to my kids.

Serving West Long Beach is an extension of that same big-sister instinct: neighbors looking out for neighbors, creating opportunities, and making sure the next generation feels safe and supported.
In honor of Geneva’s 40th birthday—and with her blessing—I’m inviting you to help us meet today’s September 30th fundraising deadline. Would you consider contributing $40 in her name to our campaign? A gift of any amount made today will help us keep looking out for our community, together.
Enjoy these old-school memories! My favorite is the one of us riding an elephant at the L.A. Zoo—back in the days when that was still allowed.

We’re this close to today’s fundraising goal—what better moment than her birthday to help us cross the finish line?
From,
