I am delighted to invite you to a very special event in our backyard—Ukulele Night with Ukulele_dad—on Monday, December 1, 2025 from 6–8 PM. This is a unique opportunity to learn to play an instrument, refine existing skills, make music, and jump into December with musical joy.
As the mother of four half-Samoan kids, Pacific Islander student success is naturally very important to me. For years, I have had the privilege of working alongside Dr. Victor Thompson on programs that support Pacific Islander students at the high school, community college, and university levels. Dr. Thompson is one of the most respected education administrators in our region, and collaborating with him has truly been an honor. Both of his parents are from Samoa, and even though he lives in Lakewood, he was born and raised in Long Beach and still serves our city in various capacities.
Dr. Thompson recently retired after a remarkable 36-year career in education, most recently serving as the Director of Student Support Services for the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE). His professional service includes roles as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, central office administrator, and adjunct professor. He founded and served as the first president of the National Pacific Islander Educator Network (NPIEN), and his leadership has influenced countless students and educators across California and beyond. He was also named the City of Lakewood’s Volunteer of the Year and has held leadership roles in ACSA, CASCWA, and his church community.
But beyond all of this, there is something truly special about Dr. Thompson: He loves music—and he LOVES the ukulele.
Known affectionately as “Ukulele_dad” on social media and his YouTube channel, Dr. Thompson runs a music studio where he teaches people of all ages how to play, compose, and enjoy the uke. A few months ago, he and I sat down to talk about my campaign, and he generously offered to host a fundraiser using his musical gifts. I am thrilled to share this unique musical experience with our community.
About Ukulele Night
On December 1st, Dr. Thompson will teach attendees a holiday song and lead us in a festive backyard jam session. Whether you’re an experienced musician or have never touched a ukulele in your life, this is your moment. If you own a ukulele, please bring it. If you don’t, we will have some available to borrow. Dr. Thompson will also explain the different types of ukuleles, their sounds, and how to choose one that suits you. We’ll be singing, strumming, and spreading holiday cheer together. Dinner will be provided.
Contribution
A minimum contribution of $100 per participant supports both our campaign and Dr. Thompson’s music studio. This event is family-friendly—couples, children, and anyone who has ever wanted to try the ukulele are welcome.
Space is very limited, so please RSVP as soon as possible.
I hope you will join us for this joyful evening as we kick off the holiday season with music, community, and the spirit of togetherness.
