Why Mothers Matter in our Community

Why Mothers Matter in our Community
From Vivian
Today, on Mother’s Day, I want to take a moment to wish a very happy Mother’s Day to my Mami, to all the mothers in our community, and to all of the mother figures who help shape our lives with love, sacrifice, wisdom, and strength. Here are a few memorable moments with my Mom.

In my own life, I have been incredibly blessed by the women who helped raise and guide me. My Abuelita played a profound role in my life, and I recently dedicated my doctoral dissertation to her because of the impact she had on the woman, mother, educator, and leader I became. Her example taught me the importance of resilience, education, faith, and family.
Today, I also want to recognize the many mothers who pour endless time and energy into supporting their children’s educational, athletic, artistic, and personal dreams. So many moms spend their lives juggling work, caregiving, transportation, homework, practices, meals, finances, and a thousand invisible responsibilities that often go unnoticed. Your labor matters. Your love matters. And your sacrifices matter.
It is important that we recognize that Mother’s Day can also be painful for many people.
For those who have lost their mothers, for women who longed to become mothers, for mothers who have lost children, and for anyone carrying grief today, please know that we see you, we feel you, and we hold space for you with love and respect.
I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the many mothers who have supported our campaign for Long Beach City Council. Many of you have hosted meet-and-greets, walked precincts, made phone calls, volunteered your time, donated resources, encouraged your neighbors to vote, and lifted up this campaign in ways both public and private. Yesterday, I shared a special social media post recognizing two longtime friends and mothers who have been especially supportive throughout this journey, and it reminded me once again how powerful women are when we support one another.
Mothers know how to carry so much while still showing up for their families and communities every single day.
Today, I hope you allow yourselves a moment to rest, breathe, laugh, and enjoy the people you love.
I also want to encourage women to stay engaged in the civic and political process. Our children learn from what we model. When they see women leading, organizing, voting, speaking up, serving the community, and stepping into public life with confidence, they learn the importance of civic responsibility and community leadership. That all begins in our homes, but it should never end there.
To all the moms, grandmothers, tias, aunties, stepmothers, godmothers, mentors, coaches, caregivers, and women who nurture others with love:
Thank you.
Happy Mother’s Day.
Thank you and God bless,
Vivian Malauulu
